New digital, streaming and physical release highlights for Sept. 12-18, 2022

Idris Elba stars as The Djinn in director George Miller’s film THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING A Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film Photo credit: Elise Lockwood© 2022 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc. All Rights Reserved

"Three Thousand Years of Longing" is one of the most beautiful films of 2022. It's also a bit odd. Directed by George Miller (Mad Max), the film is essentially a fairytale for adults that turns into a meditation on love. "The Amusement Park" is something of an oddity itself. George A. Romero is famous for his zombie films, but this is something radically different. It's a horror, but not in the way you might think.

On the physical front we get the must-see "Elvis," the enjoyable "Lightyear," and "Where the Crawdad Sings" that will appease fans of the book. It also features one of my favorite actresses, Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Here's a handpicked tour of this week's most interesting releases.

Digital to Own

Three Thousand Years of Longing

Studio Synopsis: Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic - content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both. From the mad genius of director George Miller comes this visually sumptuous tale of reason...and dreams.

Romero's THE AMUSEMENT PARK stars MARTIN's Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies, and humiliations of aging in America are manifested through roller coasters and chaotic crowds Commissioned by the Lutheran Society, the film is perhaps Romero’s wildest and most imaginative movie – an allegory about the nightmarish realities of growing older, and an alluring snapshot of the filmmaker’s early artistic capacity and style. The “lost” film was restored in 4K by IndieCollect in New York City. (Also Available on Blu-ray and DVD)

Drive 4K UHD

<="" sd-embed="">

Studio Synopsis: Drive was part of the significant influx of Hong Kong influence on American action films in the '90s. That result is a nonstop thrill ride that audiences will want to take over and over again.

The 88 Films special edition release of Drive includes the director's cut in 4K Ultra HD, as well as the original cut of the film in 2K.
